One popular independent coffee shop in Kansas City is The Roasterie. It was founded in 1993 and has grown to become a beloved local institution. They are known for their air-roasting process, which is a different way to roast coffee beans that creates a unique flavor and texture. If you were to watch this roasting process, it kind of resembles that of a popcorn machine. The Roasterie’s original location on Southwest Blvd. offers daily tours of their massive roasting factory which makes for a great travel activity. Their several other locations feature a variety of coffee drinks and the shops have a relaxed atmosphere and are a popular spot for people to work, study, or catch up with friends.

Another popular independent coffee shop in Kansas City is Thou Mayest. They have since relocated their flagship to the River Market area with an equally awesome space, which includes both a coffee shop and full bar where they will mix amazing coffee drinks or cocktails, depending on your mood or time of day. Their beans are no slouch either. Their Wild Child coffee is an amazing Ethiopian single-origin roast and is perhaps the best cup of coffee in Kansas City. Founded in 2014, the shop has a lively atmosphere and is a popular spot for people to socialize and enjoy a beverage.

If you’re looking for a classic, then look no further. Located in Westport, Broadway does strong coffee good inside a rad space that looks a little bit like the offspring of a bookstore and a record store. If you want to take home a super unique bag of beans, the Indian Monsooned Malabar is a truly different coffee roast. This was a staple for us to get some work done because it has a very eclectic and energetic vibe. The food here is great too.
