Bamberg Christmas Markets Travel Guide

Bamberg Christmas Markets

Bamberg Christmas Markets are such to be an enchanting and magical experience. It is the perfect destination to experience the Christmas Markets without the large crowds. Bamberg Christmas Markets will give you an authentic and local experience.

You will get all the wonderful food, drinks, and festive decorations that the larger markets have but in a much smaller and intimate market.

Bamberg has one Christmas Market so you will be able to enjoy the Bamberg Christmas Market while also being able to explore the city and do so at a more leisurely pace. Bamberg makes for the perfect day or slow weekend trip.

The town of Bamberg is also a UNESCO world heritage site, known for its well preserved medieval features and architecture.

It is amazing how well preserved all the buildings are, some are as old as the 10th Century! It is by a landslide the most beautiful town in Germany we visited on our two week trip.

This historic town is famous for its beer scene and beautiful medieval German homes making there lots of meaningful experiences to have in Bamberg that make it the perfect German destination.

Bamberg Christmas Markets and exploring stunning Bamberg will make the most delightful trip and the perfect addition to your German Christmas Market Itinerary.

Where is Bamberg, Germany?

Bamberg, Germany is located in southern Germany. Bamberg is just 45 minutes south of Nuremberg. It is an easy drive to Bamberg and a quick train ride.

If Bamberg is your first stop of your Germany trip you can fly into Nuremberg and head to Bamberg from there. Nuremberg is a great stop as well and would pair very well with Bamberg, Germany.

How to get to Bamberg, Germany?

You will need to rent a car to drive to Bamberg. I highly recommend doing this early on as the price goes up and the selection of cars gets limited especially if you want an automatic transmission. If you book in advance you can find 20 or less a day but if you wait the price will go on up to around 50 a day.

Once you have your rental car you are set to hit the road! The easiest way to get to Bamberg is to come from Nuremberg, it is only about 45 minutes from Nuremberg.

You can also take the train to get to Bamberg from Nuremberg. Either way 45 minutes is a quick trip to a gem off the beaten path that was one of our favorite towns in Germany and had the best beer too!

Language

In Bamberg most everyone knows basic English but as always it is so important to learn some basic phrases.

The German people are so very helpful and friendly and were so kind to help us when we were confused or were having trouble communicating.

Currency:

You will be using euros in Germany. And remember in Germany cash is queen. You will especially need cash at the Bamberg Christmas Markets. There are plenty of ATMS to use in Germany. Most ATMs will have English as an option and are very easy to use.

Budget:

You can expect to spend around 50-100 a day and around 70-100 a night for accommodations. Bamberg will have similar prices to most cities in Germany and will be slightly more affordable the more tourist cities.

Where to stay in Bamberg, Germany?

You will want to stay in the heart of Bamberg so you can easily walk around to the Old Town and the Christmas Market of course!

We had the BEST airbnb with a window looking right at the Bamberg Christmas Market! And it was so cute and clean! The only downside was the trek up all the flights of stairs but it was sooo worth it. The location was literally right in front of the Bamberg Christmas Markets. We stepped outside and bam it was right there!

You can book it here! – Sustainable Practices and great location!

Another great pick is Alstadthotel Molitor, a medieval historic hotel in the heart of Old Town Bamberg. This is the cutest area to stay in and a short walk to the Bamberg Christmas Market.

What to buy at the Bamberg Christmas Market?

Bamberg Christmas Market is a much more local market. It will have less of selection for shopping but still has a great variety of local items. You will see less goods and more food and drink options.

You will still find great quality scarves and other winter wear as well as other more practical items. Despite the limited variety the food was stellar! Some of the best food and drinks we had in Germany.

There were local items to buy at the Bamberg Christmas Markets from cookies, candy, winter gear, hats, among other goods. I would highly recommend checking out their scarves that were very high quality and made for the perfect souvenir! They are also so thick and warm. I loved the one I bought at the Bamberg Christmas Market.

What to pack for the Bamberg Christmas Markets?

You will be out and about during the day and then again at night when the lights are the prettiest. With all that time in the cold you will need all the layers and gear to make it an enjoyable experience. And gluhwein helps warm you up too, so drink up buttercup. Besides drinking gluhwein there are lots of must pack items to help make your trip to Bamberg more enjoyable despite the cold weather!

A thick and long coat with a hood is very important. The length is important as, a long one to your knees will keep you much warmer and the hood will come in handy when it rains and snows. This is something worth investing in, you will not regret it. We both have Eddie Bauer coats we love but any thick winter jacket will do.

Hand warmers and shoe warmers– This was a game changer. Bring enough of these for most of the days to put in your gloves and boots. Many last ten hours or more making it perfect for a day exploring in the cold weather.

Hat (woman)– You will need a thick hat that is cute and covers your ears to keep you warm and great for cute Cologne Christmas Market pics! Mens Hat

Scarf– Scarves are so important because they seal up the warmth and will keep your neck and upper chest warm. Bring one you can wear with anything! They also will have some at the markets too that make for the perfect souvenir. Men keep in mind scarves are more common for men’s fashion in Germany so do what the Germans do and get a stylish scarf to keep yourself warm.

Gloves– A couple things to consider for gloves, you will need waterproof gloves, with a phone touch for taking pictures, and thick gloves. Here are some that are similar to the ones we have but any gloves that have those things will fit the bill.

Boots– I only brought one pair of boots and wore them everyday. Be sure to find one that has excellent traction because many times the sidewalks will not be properly shoveled or salted so this is crucial. Also be sure they are waterproof and are versatile to dress up or down as needed. These are the ones I brought with me.

Photography Needs- The Christmas Markets in Cologne are even prettier than all the videos and instagram pics you’ve seen and you will want to take pictures of EVERYTHING! We always travel with our selfie stick that doubles as a tripod and also our flexible tripod to curl around odd objects to get the perfect pic- both are so handy! We also have been carrying with us a polaroid camera because they make for the cutest little souvenirs.

Toiletries Essentials- We brought these toiletry containers and they lasted us almost the entire two week trip for two people only refilling towards the end of our trip. We love them because they don’t spill open when pushed down in your suitcase and also can stand up in the shower on their own. They also come with labels which is very helpful.

Our Travel Musts- We never travel without a travel adapter and a rechargeable battery.

We love the travel adapter because it is universal means it works for all the different outlets so we can take the same one everywhere!

The portable battery has been so handy when our phone dies after using maps all day and we can not get stranded somewhere with a dead phone and no idea how to get home. For me this is a safety must- you always want a functioning phone on you- especially us ladies.

Outside of those items bring a ton of socks, thermal layers, and really thick sweaters. And I’d recommend a bag to carry at the markets if you plan on buying souvenirs and possibly a bag to take back the extra souvenirs you bring back and all those gluhwein mugs.

Bamberg Christmas Market

There is just one Bamberg Christmas Market but it is just adorable and located in the main square of Bamberg. It is so quaint yet bustling and festive that makes it the perfect stop in your German Christmas Market itinerary!

Prepare yourself for a much smaller market with maybe 30 or less stalls but with so many wonderful delightful foods and drinks to try!

It is not just the Bamberg Christmas Market you come for, it is the very German town with its traditional medieval style buildings and alleyways that make you think you somehow are in on a secret, a gem you are so thrilled to have stumbled on.

It is just a matter of time before Bamberg becomes on every traveler’s bucket list for better or worse. Take the trip to see it before it becomes a tourist hot spot. Come now when you can enjoy the friendly locals, the colorful medieval buildings, the stone bridges, the smoked beer and all the other delights that make Bamberg the perfect stop.

And lucky for you, not many other travelers will be thinking of visiting the Bamberg Christmas Market so this is a great time to explore Bamberg.

The Bamberg Christmas Market will get busy in the evenings so be sure to come early to but also come at night to enjoy it’s sparkling lights and the bustling vibrant energy that the locals bring to the Christmas Market.

Come hungry and wander through the stalls and eat and drink it all while looking at all the local goods that are for sale. This is a perfect way to spend your day and night.

In between the day and evening trips to the Bamberg Christmas Markets take the time to explore Bamberg as well. Read on to see the must go places in Bamberg.

*Tip: There is a wonderful pop up coffee stand just to the side of the Bamberg Christmas Market by the Bamberg Cathedral.

Things to do in Bamberg, Germany (Other than the Christmas Market)?

Charity Tree

Visit the Charity Tree– The Charity tree is located just to the side of the Bamberg Christmas Market right in front of the church. It will be easy to find just look for the big Christmas tree with ornaments on it. As sustainable travelers we are always looking for ways to contribute to our SEEK (Social Sustainability, Economic Sustainability, Environment Sustainability, and Knowledge) Out Sustainability Goals and love that the Charity Tree allowed us this perfect opportunity!

You can donate as much as you would like or your budget allows but the minimum is one euro to get an ornament and to hang it on the Bamberg Christmas Tree.

Proceeds went to the local Rotary Club that helps to support the community through areas of focus from the environment, peace building/conflict resolution, healthcare needs, education and literacy and community development.

Bamberg Christmas Markets

The Bamberg Cathedral

The Bamberg Cathedral– The Bamberg Cathedral is right by the Charity Christmas tree and is stunning. The Bamberg Cathedral has intricate details and carvings inside the cathedral that are awe inspiring and is worth walking in and taking in the beauty of one of the most famous cathedrals in all of Germany. It is outside of the 13th century cathedral known for its Romanesque architecture that is just as beautiful, maybe even more so almost looking castle like. This is a must to do in Bamberg and is located so close to the Bamberg Christmas Market and an easy stop.

The Bamberg Old Town Hall

Bamberg Old Town Hall – Stadt Bamberg- The Bamberg Town Hall and Bridge is the number one thing to do while in Bamberg, Germany! And you will immediately see why, this Old Town Hall is straight out of a fairy tale with its brightly painted walls, beautiful art painted on the side of the building even complete with a sculpture that sticks out of part of the painting of the building making it seem to come alive.

You can get a great view of the Old Town Hall while on the bridge taking pictures of the Town Hall while also getting great shots down the alley ways.

Another great view is if you go down a street and can get a picture of the water, bridge, and the Old Town Hall all in one shot.

I recommend seeing it from both views as they are both such unique views and the walk to both areas and near the Old Town Hall is such an enchanting area.

The Old Town Hall has an interesting history as well. According to legend the bishop of Bamberg would not allow the citizens any city land to build the town hall.

To solve this problem the Bamberg locals created an “island” in which to build the town hall on. The town hall sits on the river making it that much more beautiful with the reflection of the water.

The Bamberg Old Quarter

Old Town (Old Quarter)– The Old Town or Old Quarter in Bamberg is a UNESCO listed old quarter. It is simply breathtaking with its colorful medieval buildings and cobblestone streets that will make you think you have been transported back into the medieval times. The Old Town will remind you of every fairy tale or instagram picture of the picturesque German streets.

Smoked Beer at a Bamberg Brewery

Try Smoked Beer at a Bamberg Brewery– Bamberg is famous for their smoked beer and their incredible beer scene making some of the best beer in the world. Legend has it the brewery burned down and when they tasted the surviving beer it had a very distinct smoked taste that became a beloved local favorite.

We went to Klosterbräu Brewery to taste the legendary smoked beer and ohhh WOOOOWW! It did not disappoint, one of the best beers we have ever had! All of the beers were truly phenomenal, you can not go wrong with any of the beers you try there!

The entire experience at Klosterbräu Brewery was life changing. It was a cozy building with huge lumber beams and medieval architecture. It was the quiet murmur of conversations of locals, the delicious crafted beer, and the extremely friendly bartender teaching us all about Bamberg beer, clearly so proud and happy to teach us all about the local delicacy that made this one of our best travel experiences to date.

It is these authentic experiences that make travel so memorable. Be sure to stop by Klosterbräu Brewery and enjoy the smoked beer.

Seek Out Sustainable Travel

As an ethical and sustainable travel blog for the budget travelers we want to help you SEEK out Sustainable Travel while in Bamberg to help you travel better! Following SEEK out Sustainable Travel Pillars we can all make a positive impact by support Social Sustainability, Environmental Sustainability, Economic Sustainability, and the power of learning and expand our Knowledge.

Social Sustainability- Understanding the culture and customs in Germany and doing everything in your power to treat the locals with respect and kindness.

In Germany a great way to do this is to learn German phrases and words when communicating with Germans.

Another important part of German culture is structure and rules- they are huge about following all the rules to a T. For example J walking is very frowned upon and not something you should do. Following the rules in a very uniform way is something you want to do in respect with their culture. While waiting in line in Germany I was standing maybe 5 inches over the line and was told to move back to the line to give you an idea of what I mean by follow the rules.

Following customs and culture norms is something as travelers that is so important and a wonderful trade off for getting to experience a new culture! It is these culture differences that make travel so fun!

Environmental Sustainability

  • Using Re-usable Goods when possible- Germany does a great job providing paper straws, recycling, and other sustainable practices! When possible use your own water bottle or thermos to cut down on waste.
  • Reduce Pollution and use of Fossil Fuels- Walk or bike when possible to cut down on our use of fossil fuels and pollution whenever possible! Plus this will help work off all those delicious food and drink you will be enjoying!

Economic Sustainability- As travelers we have a powerful tool that can leave a positive impact on the communities we visit in how we spend our money and where we spend our money.

Not only can we give money to the local community but we can make changes in what causes we can effect systematic change. For example, in spending our money at an elephant sanctuary and not riding an elephant we can do our part to put businesses that support animal cruelty out of business.

Stay Locally- when possible stay at a locally ran accommodation where your money can go in the hands of a local.

Eat and Drink Locally- Drink and Eat Locally which is easy to do when you are visiting the Cologne Christmas Markets!

Knowledge- Knowledge is the key to all change in our world. In educating ourselves as travelers we can leave a positive impact on the places we explore.

There is a lot of fascinating history in Bamberg. Going on local tours and visiting the Old Quarter and seeing the UNESCO heritage sites listed above are great places to start with to help you learn more about Bamberg. Above are local tours that are informative as well.
