An Ode to Gourmet Dumpling House In Boston

Boston travel guide - Gourmet Dumpling House Boston
I recently learned that Boston’s Gourmet Dumpling House, home to one of the best travel food experiences of my life, closed permanently.

Years ago, I wrote about Gourmet Dumpling House as a part of our Wander From Home series describing travel experiences in short snippets.

Below is that mini article unedited. It serves as my eulogy to Gourmet Dumpling House, a makeshift memorial — if you will — and a wish that you find your place, wherever it is, that makes you feel this way. I still have the memories. Please enjoy this immaculate food experience that still haunts me to do this day...

You know the place. There’s always a line out the door. And yet it seems hidden.

Inconspicuous. A secret that everyone’s in on. Time for you to be in on it too.

In Boston’s storied China Town, there’s a little hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant that’s so good, I once ate there 3 times on one trip. Don’t be fooled. This isn’t a tourist trap. It’s the real deal.

Picture it now: you’re ushered to your table in short order. Before you process the expansive menu that represents all of China’s amazing food regions, you’ve got an imported beer bottle sweating on the table. Sweating like you will be after the spices and chillies that fill the air make it to a plate in front of you.

The energy from the kitchen migrates to your table. You can sense the love and attention to detail in the food before you’ve even ordered.

Once you pick something — anything — it isn’t pretty. There’s no prize for plating and presentation. You don’t need it. In fact, you want the mess. You want the disorientation of not really knowing what’s what or how to eat it.

The dumplings and the sauce are otherworldly, but it’s that szechuan chicken dish that sends you into sensory overload.

How can something taste so good? How can it make me feel this good? Hell, maybe I’m the only one that gets off on eating at Gourmet Dumpling House like this…. But I highly doubt it.

Where is Gourmet Dumpling House?: Go to Boston’s ChinaTown district, find the main entry arch (see the photos below), then you can’t miss it.

What to eat: Pork dumplings, steamed. Beef lo-mein. Szechuan Chicken. (But really, anything will be good).

What to drink: A nice Asian import beer will suit the mood just right.

Have you had a food experience while traveling that sticks with you like this? Where was it? What was your favorite dish?
